Insight: Food waste is a huge global problem, yet while around 50% of all food ends up in landfill as waste, 1/8th of the world population goes hungry.
We have an idea that can make a difference on a huge global scale. It’s not a campaign or a clever slogan- but a simple system that can be adapted by food manufacturers and supermarkets worldwide. It’s called...
Unexpired is an open source global system where food producers push the expiration date of their products back 10 days. Meaning that if a product that has been on the shelf for maybe a year or more, has not sold and has reached it’ s expiration date, rather then being thrown in the trash, like tons of food is...It can instead be picked up by a charity, and still be safely used to feed the hungry.
Producers that take part in Unexpired, would simply print the expiry date on their products in green instead of black. A simple change, that would allow supermarkets and charities to know that that item can be donated and used 10 days past the date of it’s expiry.
